Overtime Compensation

Employees who work in their “spare time” are eligible to overtime pay. It’s also a way to make sure that companies don’t force workers to work too many hours and don’t hire new workers who may be entitled to benefits even though they’re paid the same.

The California Employment Code 510 has rules about overtime. Under the law, a day’s work is described as eight hours of work. The next part says:

Any extra work done beyond eight hours in a single workday or 40 hours in a single workweek, as well as the first eight hours of work on the seventh day of work and the first eight hours of work in any given workweek, will be paid for at 1.5 times the regular rate of pay.

If a worker puts in more than 12 hours of work in a single day, the boss has to pay him or her twice the normal rate of pay.
